Flying lotus has always been a huge influenced of mine, but i have to say that this album just takes everything to the next level. This albums just sounds crisp and warm to the ears. One of the reasons i have so much respect for this man is how unique his sound is. You can tell many unique styles influenced this album. He has done an amazing job blending different styles to make this album just pop. Alot of the album sounds like it was produced more like a hip-hop record, but the music itself bounces around from IDM/electronic sounds to free form jazz style feel. Also when i say IDM, im not talking like autechre and v snares stuff at all of course. He seems to use a lot of old school sounds, It almost sounds like he is using a Korg Ms-20(Even though its a newer synth, you get the point) or something like that for the synth and bass sounds.

At first I was so dubious about this, I wasnt sure I would like its 'dubby' feel or its Dancehall-Step as I was more interested in a sub-bass dubstep / grime fest. But this release has made me mature and avoid grimey angry litte brats!
Also, what really blew my mind was the connection to ICE, GOD, Techno Animal and Dalek! Brilliant!
Each song on this album is a winner, individual and so diverse and progressive. Considering I got into this genre via getting bored of low-end sonic doom (Sunn, Earth, Melvins)...I cant wait to get more of it!

This album isn't a huge departure from what we're used to hearing from Explosions In The Sky, but it does have a more mature feel about it. Lengthy crescendos and tremolo plucked guitars drenched in reverb and delay echo throughout your mind, with melodies that soar higher than the clouds. This album takes you on a roller coaster ride- at times very quiet, then building into a fortified wall of exquisite noise. Sometimes it feels like the music is soaring past you at 100 miles per hour while your left standing still in the wake of the vibrations. Definitely a keeper for the post-rock/shoegaze/Indie fans.

This is an excellent album. Beautiful, haunting lyrics combined with a melancholy voice make this CD one that you will listen to over and over and over again. The closest thing I can compare it to is Bon Iver's For Emma, but much more polished.

I have suggested this album to a number of friends and each person comes back saying how much they love it. A very solid album throughout, I highly recommend it.

The more I listen to this album the more I am amazed by the talent of The Shins. All of the songs on the album are fantastic, with the except of Pam Berry which is only 57 seconds and I'm not really sure what purpose it serves. Despite this unusual addition, each song is unique, rich, and catchy in its own way - With exception for Black Wave which is chilling, haunting, and beautiful. The Shins sound great and use stereo sound craftfully and not cheesy in some of their songs. Some of their lyrics are hard to comprehend unless you have read them first. When you read them you will be even more impressed with The Shins, as the lyrics alone are poetic and moving. This is a fantastic album with rich, unique, and wonderful songs that have moved me.

Múm's playful approach to folktronica is already a solid staple among its contemporary experimental artists, regardless of this Icelandic group's changing members or branching out styles. Upon first listen the album defied my expectations. But then again, I couldn't pinpoint exactly what I awaited to hear. Through the fourth rotation, I was already familiar with the toytronic treatment and the lo-fi acoustic melodies, and started concentrating on the elaborated details of the individual tracks.

This band falls in a genre that I have been discovering lately. Part rock, part alternative, part electronic. Other bands I have been listening to, among others, are Explosion in the Sky, If These Trees Could Talk, and This Will Destroy You. While I enjoy these bands, I believe God is an Astronaut brings something new to the mix. Maybe it's just me, but the way the band creates melodies in which all the instruments come together to create a unique, penetrating sound that just takes you away, makes you feel part of the music, is just stunning. I strongly recommend this album to all fans of the genre, you will not be disapointed!

Shizor wowed critics with its giddy, crazy blend of punk rock electronics. During the popularity with Shizuo's music, David also started a band with Annika and Razi Barakat called Give Up (Razi had earlier been featured on The Cramps cover song "New Kick"), but the band later broke up after the 1997 DHR tour due David's heavy usage of LSD, as a serious disagreement with creative differences led to David legitamely attacking Razi half way through their set.[citation needed] The two would never collaborate again, as both were interviewed about the incident in the short lived DHR fanzine.
Hammer's last release under the Shizuo alias was with the self released vinyl Shizuo No.1 in 2000. He was last seen playing guitar in a Berlin based band called The Nothings. Trost now performs solo or with Cobra Killer.

This is an exceptional album from Nicolay, showing his further exploration into the Nujazz realm. The entire album has a cinematic feel, with a Japanese-tinged element all across the album. Most of the album is instrumental, with Carlitta Durand lending her wonderful voice to 4 of the tracks on the album. I in particular love the warm keyboards and synthesizers, which is reminiscent of Weather Report or even Hiroshima in the jazz fusion and funk jazz eras. I definitely recommend this album as it shows Nicolay's further musical progression and skills as a multi-instrumentalist, as well as an epic producer. Fans of the Foreign Exchange should definitely buy this album. As Phonte suggested in his blog, please buy the CD rather than downloading it from iTunes to help this artist recieve his fair recognition in album sales.

Zeigeist - The Jade Motel [2008]

Listen to them once and you'd be forgiven for mistaking Zeigeist for fellow Swedish art poppers The Knife. The first few tracks certainly support this theory. But listen again and you'll start to notice the (admittedly minor) differences. For one, Zeigeist trade off vocal duties between Princess and Per (no surnames needed, apparently), giving their sound a little bit more variety. Secondly, though they wear their "artsy" label proudly on their sleeves, Zeigeist's music is almost always more direct and more pop. This would be an amazing thing if the songs on their debut had the kind of hooks needed to match their fantastic electro dance beats. The album improves as it goes on, but even with repeated listens, there isn't much to sink your teeth into. "Black milk" and "Cuffs" have some interesting ideas, while "Wrecked metal" is probably the most immediately catchy of all the tracks. The frustrating thing is that it's clear that the band has enough creativity to come up with something really jaw-dropping. I'm sure every song works better as a part of their reportedly theatric live shows, but on record it's a little less than inspiring.

Crystal Antlers - Tentacles [2009]

Has any rock band in history been more in love with the whine of an organ than Crystal Antlers? On the SoCal six-piece's debut, Victor Rodriguez's buzzing, shrieking organ chords are pushed to the front of the mix — the heroic voice that arcs above the band's riotous guitar-bass-drums clamor. Songs like "Dust" and the bluesy "Andrew" evoke late-Sixties garage rock, but there are hints of other styles: German krautrock, Japanese noise rock and, in "Until the Sun Dies (Part One)," the free-jazz eruptions of late-period Coltrane. It's unclear what frontman Jonny Bell is caterwauling about, but it scarcely matters. The vocals are just another sound bubbling up through the thick sonic stew — the "lead singer" here is the organ.

The XX, four kids from the dubstep heartland of south London, have quietly set up an emotional squat in those spaces, with bedsit-delicate love songs. It’s strange that such a traditional

The praise can be laid at the door of the band themselves: synths-and-beats man Jamie Smith produced the album himself and they draw together eclectic materials from avant-garde hip-hop to R&B to pure pop.

Having previously heard Beni Uthman’s (aka Benga) track titled Music Box on Mary Anne Hobbs’ The Warrior Dubz, I picked up his first full length release on Tempa. The fourteen track album is a total trip through some of the deepest, groovy and at the same time melodic dubstep that I’ve heard to date. Operating out of South London, Benga’s previous numerous 12-inchers appeared on genre’s head-starters like Big Apple Records, Planet Mu, Hotflush Recordings and Southside Substars. Diary of an Afro Warrior is more than just a collection of previously heard hooks shoved through the dubstep grinder - each is unique in texture, style, and rhythm; each contains that ’in your face’ attitude that I love so much about confident artists. Among the common groove treatments, I hear some prominent hip-hop influence, electro breaks, wobbly bass and even elements of minimal and funky house. With an incredible resource of ideas, directions and style incorporation demonstrated by Benga, we can be very confident in accepting that dubstep is here to stay, and evolve way beyond its current adolescent form. Note that the tracks appearing on a 3xVinyl release are pretty different from the CD release (for example, it doesn’t contain the 2007 hit, Night, featuring D. Harris as Coki and instead it appears as a separate 12" EP). Highly recommended if you enjoy Skream, Boxcutter, Distance, Pinch and Burial. Favorite tracks: Zero M2, Night, Go Tell Them, and Emotions.

Tangerine Dream - Ricochet [1975]

"Part One," recorded in Autumn 1975 in France, opens up with a solemn march. Froese's fuzzed guitar introduces the main theme of the piece (a repeated melody of C-Bflat-Aflat-G-F-G), then the keyboards latch on to it, doubling the melody and adding harmonic variations. Of note, there are real drum sounds (presumably Chris Franke, given his earlier role in the band and the emphasis on toms) in addition to synthetic percussion. The march builds and builds, before being intruded upon by a sudden barrage of garbled sound samples. At about eight minutes into "Part One", the second half turns an urgent pace. Now the instantly recognizable, classic Tangerine Dream sound flows in: looping melodic patterns and rhythmic sequencing to weave a soft thread of hypnosis about the listener. The band explode with a bouquet of different sounds, the layering of which is astounding, if you really sit and listen to everything that's going on. Again, did just three people play all of what we hear at once live? Incredible, if so; they must have had state-of-the-art equipment. The main theme resurfaces soon enough to lend some thematic cohesion.

"Part Two" was recorded in Croyden, England (October 23, 1975) and contains a prelude with a delicate piano ringing out lonely notes with just the right amount of echo, before a flute mellotron wanders into the picture to provide companionship. Though brief, this is one of the most beautiful moments on the album, with higher notes twinkling in the distance somewhat recalling Frippertronics. Then, it's off to another wave or two of racing, mechanistic sequencing and kaleidoscopic patterns, sometimes louder and sometimes softer, more or less seeing us through the remainder of "Part Two."

UNKLE - End Titles... Stories for Film [2008]

Not the new UNKLE album then, but a collection of music recorded since the band finished War Stories two years ago. End Titles comprises their music for TV and film projects, with 10 of the tracks taken from a documentary about cult film director Abel Ferrara. Like their subjects' movies, the mood is sombre. After working with DJ Shadow and then Richard File, UNKLE mainstay James Lavelle is now in cahoots with Pablo Clements of the Psychonauts, though the shift from trip-hop to widescreen stoner rock made on War Stories is still holding firm. UNKLE are good at gothic bombast and when they pile on the strings they produce densely atmospheric pieces such as Cut Me Loose. Typically for an UNKLE project, guest stars abound and Ferrara himself croaks like Dylan on Open Up Your Eyes, which perhaps should have been left on the cutting-room floor.

It’s an ephemeral fix, a little spark that holds enormous appeal for (but certainly not just for) wistful young adults world-round. I doubt I need to recount my friends and I recently watching Darkwing Duck on Youtube to make my point—you get the idea. The idealistic pull is everywhere: it’s why you can’t walk around a campus without seeing a Jem t-shirt, why nerds think gaming piqued with Battletoads, why Labyrinth would be anyone’s favorite movie, and why anybody over the age of nine will enjoy Passion Pit’s Manners.

Futuro Primitivo (a.k.a. Matjaz Mon) is a post-electronica act from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Matjaz developed a very personal vision of music and the current times being often credited as a “primitivist musician from the end of the world” and “the dark side of Manu Chao”. His music style comes from a combination of post-rock, IDM, nu-jazz and digital hardcore, retainning a characteristic sound using solely virtual instruments and processing.

His debut release, Everyday Life is War, is a concept album made available as “pay-what-you-want” model, curiously the same day the War on Gaza started. On stage, Futuro Primitivo employs visual elements to accompany performances.

Skream - Rinse 02 [2007]

This mix is quite a hefty run through of all the big tracks of 2007 in the world of Dub-step (which is a relatively new but ever-increasingly popular music genre). The sound is from London and the UK (which is where most of the producers on the mix come from. The tracks are based upon what DJ Skream likes personally and what he plays at DJ sets (or was in the 2007-2008 period).
Kulture kicks off the mix with a reggae infuse synth bassline rizing track which gets the energy levels pumping straight from the outset (interesting way to start a mix!) Next is a track from Skream himself which was popular one on pirate radio and in D clubs 'wobble that gut' with minimal progressive beats and bass-lines. Next is another skream track of a remix of a garage track by dj zinc. Its got bass technical-wobbles and a sick vocal (cool). Then its Skream again with Cluekid on a more intense bass-snaking downwards. A cool track by Skream called sinisterize is minimal with a one note horn riff and cool technical drums. Kode 9 comes with an abstract turn in the mix. Next is a v. popular bass shifting track from benga. Coki comes with an equally bassy shifting track.
The tracks continue with variations on the above tracks mentioned and stay equally bassy and in touch with one another. There are more interesting Skream tracks towards the end of the disc. Overall the cd is interesting but can become repetative with time. But it is a good look at what was going on in the world of skream in 2007.

You have to pity poor Skream (or Olli Jones as he's known to his mum). Having had enough music stored away for several (ok - several hundred) albums, his dubstep debut arrives with a rather dull thud, obscured not only by the a handful of recent offerings (not least Burial's gorgeously deep outing), but also, ironically, by his own prodigous talent.

Having churned out the dubs at a rate of nots (and released the vastly superior Skreamizm series, also on Tempa), the album has a "will this do?" quality to it - any casual listener to his regular Rinse FM shows will know Jones can do so much better than the awkward jump-up of 'Kut-Off' or the non-descript 'Tortured Soul'.

Although it comes nowhere near the futuristic funk of 'Blipstream' or 'Lightning's feverish junglisms, 'Skream!' still contains some devestating delights for the dancefloor, even if few suprises. 'Dubbers Anonymous' is a brilliantly minimal low-end wobbler, worth the entrance fee alone.

Rare Atom Heart tracks from 1992, with Tetsu Inoue. "18th release on Recognition, label run from Warsaw, Poland by Jacek Sienkiewicz, is a rare and special one. If Autechre are subliminal hiphop, Prefuse 73 brings the nerdy harddisk-rock of Autechre back to the streets.

Brilliant! Normally I can't stand house music, but Herbert always comes through with something intelligent and tasteful that you can sit and listen to with headphones.
The album features samples of household sounds, a Herbert trademark. His collaboration with Matmos has led him to include medical samples (laser eye surgery) and body sounds, like the sampled sound of blood flowing through M.C. Schmidt's veins.
However creepy this may all sound, these songs are lush and beautiful. Dani Siciliano's singing reminds me a bit of Siouxsie's vocals with the Creatures. The lyrics themselves are a bit vague but definitely better than the "love will save the day" nonsense that house divas generally belt out.
Highly recommended.

This here pile of mentality is electronic mayhem for the bulk of its 52 minutes. The first four tracks hammer away at your auditory sensibilities with a constant barrage of bizarre stimulus: the roadrunner pops by, melees of reversing baselines flip around, mariachi bands appear, all manner of synthesizer molestation, drum and bass growls, reggae sounds, jungle drums, and old school hip-hop samples are assimilated. Anyone bored listening to this should qualify for a death certificate. Every noise Miguel "Kid 606" Depedro touches becomes irrevocably mangled and rearranged to complete nonsense and back to brilliance, completely reinventing the possibilities of sampling in the process. Not that the album is without a softer side. "Total Recovery Is Possible" is one bastard of a grating downbeat track and "If I Had A Happy Place This Would Be It" sounds exactly as I imagine someone injecting the world’s biggest Vitamin C fan with an overdose of heroin during their first ever listen of "Graduation" right before the first chorus, and then breaking apart said fan’s skull with a sledgehammer after C says "...times we had together" to feast upon the gooey nectar within (I wonder why my parents got called into school so much…). The finished product is a pillhead mindblower, excellent for all manner of after party and great for pissing off the neighbors. I can’t sit still listening to it, so you may want to lay off writing or painting when this is on but they’re your ears. Treat them wisely and shove this in ‘em!

Our Release begins with the post digital whisperings from “Ella hablaba en RGB”, of El Lazo Invisible:.."she only speaks RGB, in 3 channels, infront of a screen continuosly available.-You have 3 options –she used to tell me, morning is a nice colourfull vector".. Like a natural flow, Meiker paints this release with the colors of a warm evening with his track “Naranja (That Nostalgic Feeling)”. We arribe to last thoughts of the day sonic textures with “Sinking downwards in dire ruin (f.ss)” a Bifidus’ track that like his previous work, gives a sound to that state between being awake and being asleep. Insecto from Chile, situate us inside an arena where rhythmic collapses, textures and microscopic melodies clash between themselves.

Rivel, with “Back again” gave us one of his best tracks to date: an undersea dubby garden with paths that bifurcates at unison into his own very logic. "Dodecafuced" by Subnor is a very cinematographic IDM that constructs an imaginary short-film with perfect timing. Emmerichk with "Maquiventa" also forms a narrative with true contemplative thoughts in constant transitions to new forms. AAM with “Bad japanese movie” place us in the middle of a cluster of textures that works as a camouflage to rhythms floating under a dense residual scheme. zofa in cycles makes display of his ability to leave us in the middle of a field of unsolved tensions that unease the listener. "Photon" by Absolute time is a piece that searches getting away from the minimal as we know it and make us sigh a little bit for the nineties.

Then comes “America B” that slowly builds up pressure with the live horns that carry us all the way until it literally blows your head off, always with their trademark warm and ominous fog.

Cockney speaking French knob twiddler Lionel Flairs is currently shacked up in Paris producing some of the most eccentric and off-beat pop & electro that you are likely to have heard since the start of this admittedly young millennium.
Starting his career as a bass player for Ben’s Symphonic Orchestra, first two albums produced by Oxford based Radiohead & Supergrass management, he very soon tours the globe & also starts playing for established French bands such as Mellow, AlexGopher Benjamin Diamond or the Hush Puppies, to name a few.
....But Years of shuttling between gay Paris, Staines (before Ali G and Hard-Fi had heard of it) and London’s Soho infused the maverick songsmith with the tongue-in-cheek triple irony of post-post modern England : he sets up a studio, puts his brains to work and soon produces « the non PC ep » a now collector white vinyl 12’ (2004/microbe rec.)
Thanks to the sonic talents of legendary producers Etienne de Crécy & Alex Gopher, he then self releases his « Better than Prince EP » 7’ limited edition customized vinyl (via his label, muddy trench rec.), a cynical electronica piece disguised in a form of basic indie rock…few weeks after, Koln based infamous producer Patrick Alavi (roXour) offers him to officially re-release the single, to be out in march 2008, with brilliant remixes from Benjamin (texas/Kitsuné) 25HRS a day (Phoenix & Cassius remixes) and Alavi himself (reRoX).
Not wasting his cockney rhyme, Flairs also gets a golden hand from French Wonders Jonas & François (Justice D.A.N.C.E, Kavinsky, Keanye West, Madonna "4 minutes"…) who produced a « better than Prince » stunning animated psychedelic Walt Dysney on acid video...that one can watch below !
Last but not least, Flairs recently finished producing & mixing a debut album that will demonstrate that when it comes to surpassing the little one formerly known as ‘The love symbol’ in hatching the perfect 3 minute electro pop gems, he is the dog’s bollock’s, mate...

Yuksek - Away from the sea [2009]

Many artists have aspirations. Some bands aim to sound exactly like their idols, never quite getting there ("Dude, we are so close to Nirvana status, I can feel it!") and others take influences and ideas and attempt to carve a more unique niche in the respective genre they reside in.
In terms of sound, Yuksek sits dubiously in the Alternative/Dance section which is already bulging with household names like Daft Punk, Justice and LCD Soundsystem. If you could take each of those artists and buy a big enough blender, then Yuksek is the dark, frothy liquid produced from that rather disgusting metaphor. It doesnt taste bad, it just looked a whole lot more appetising before the ingredients went in.
Yukseks problem is his desire to be bigger than he actually is. His beats and production are both impressive but theres something amateurish about the whole album which brings the overall impact down a notch. Imagine a homeless guy in an Armani suit; everything on show is well presented and attractive but on the inside, its still just a dirty guy in expensive clothes.
Introductory track Break Ya is possibly the most interesting on the record and is a huge, stomping, intelligently crafted beast. However, it begs to be a Justice track to such a degree that you cant help but want to put them on instead.
When hes not attempting the overblown, the man actually knows how to sound inviting. A lot of the material present on the CD starts off as competent and intriguing (see; Little Dirty Trip) but as was to be expected, he ruins the potential by trying to sound like someone he isnt. If youre less confident than the music youre trying to create then dont make the music youre attempting, it doesnt sound right.
It is regrettable that when Yuksek seems to be on the right track, he cannot help but veer slightly off, incorporating cheesy Euro-Pop style vocals into the fray or opting for a simple quiet/loud/louder break structure which sounds like a hundred other, less skilled dance musicians. He seems to have one foot in the realm of serious music-making and the other in a pool of retro, cliché pop nonsense.
Theres a lot to enjoy on the record, its just constantly hindered by uninviting pointlessness which has no place on an album with actual potential. Give him another album, a quick lesson in subtlety and we could have the next D.A.N.C.E. on our hands. For now, well justput that on instead.

The Presets - Beams [2006]

This would have to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year so far, as Sydney duo The Presets take their first smoothly crafted step into debut-land. Since their first EP Blow Up back in 2003, people have fallen for their delectable electro punk invasions both live and recorded. They’ve managed to win over audiences both at home and abroad touring with The Dissociatives and warming the stages for the likes of The Faint, Cut Copy and Placebo, but can they pull it off with their debut?

The answer YES, written in baroque cheesy 80s neon lights even! It has it’s classic no-brainer electro thumpers, ‘Down Down Down’, ‘Are You The One?’, ‘Kitty In The Middle’, ‘I Go Hard, I Go Home’ & the Prodigy sounding ‘Girl (You Chew My Mind Up)’ (05’s answer to 04’s ‘Girls Can Be Cruel’) which are likely to appeal to the masses and earn them the ‘next great white hope’ tag from both the rock and the dance communities alike. But if you think that’s where The Presets begin and end, then looks are very deceiving with this highly decorated pair. Scratch a little harder and you’ll peel away the layers to find a band capable of making much more than just a plain black and white record.

Beams may be short and sweet coming in at the 43 minute mark, but that doesn’t mean they ignored their other guises in the process of making Beams, quite on the contrary, they’ve taken each different facet of their sound and challenged it a little further, with exquisite results. It has it’s quieter, dark electro pop outbursts with ‘Worms’, the gorgeously engaging melancholy of ‘Bad Up Your Betterness’ and timeless classic beauty of ‘Girl & The Sea’ which is packed with enough punch to have even the toughest wiping a stray tear from their dampened cheek. Then there are the cinematic wonders of the record, which could be the shining lights on Beams (no pun intended). They’re both ball-breakingly original and have succeeded in what most bands have spent years setting out to achieve, but not quite managing to do with the same debonair that The Presets have with ‘Black Background’ and ‘Beams’, tipping the hat to their Prop days of genius.

It's a soulful mix of soul, jazz and electro. The vocals are great (although personally I'm not particularly fond of Sia Furler at certain moments) and the arrangements are right on the money for this type of "retro-techno" sound. I sometimes get confused if it's a smooth jazz combo trying to be electronic or an electronic group trying to be smooth jazz.

Telefon Tel Aviv will release their third album, Immolate Yourself, early in 2009 on BPitch Control.

After many years of recording for Chicago indie stalwart Hefty Records, Telefon Tel Aviv have jumped ship to BPitch Control for their latest effort, perhaps in a nod to the friendship forged when one-half of the group helped in the production of Apparat's Walls. Or perhaps they just like what the group is calling a new direction: " Gone are all of the high-definition micro-edit minutiae in favor of a new approach to texture for us - long form."

While we're not sure exactly what that means, if the recent remixes by the duo are any indication, you can expect a lush album with pop ambitions. That and "tape loops of church music" apparently.

This is one of the most powerful albums one could stumble upon. I'm always telling my friends (over the 'net) about tracks on this album as I listen to it, and am dismayed at my inability to describe what I'm feeling. The feelings I get from Geogaddi are often nostalgic, yearning, and some other emotions that have yet to be named.

Have you ever been camping completely in the wilderness, and been woken up early in the morning by voices outside your tent? Have you noticed how the voices sound when you're in that half-awake state? That's the sort of state that is best to be in when listening to Geogaddi. Half-asleep with enhanced dream perception, that is.

By the way, Geogaddi is definitely incomplete without the last track. I can't imagine listening to it without From One Source All Things Depend. Perhaps I was spoiled, but it just seems perfectly-placed. The other Geogaddi releases seem naked without it.

Tuesday night, a few dozen journalists and fortunate fans braved inclement weather to get a first listen to Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, due January 20th on Domino Records. On first listen, the band’s eighth studio album proved less linear and immediately accessible than last year’s Strawberry Jam, and more in line with their recent, more atmospheric Water Curses EP.
Merriweather is the soundtrack for the ultimate hippie/ambient tribal dance party, a giddy, freewheeling, psychedelic beast of an album, full of big beats, trippy drones and glistening synths dancing around the band’s rich, reverb-drenched, fugue-like vocal layers. (That’s the album’s equally tripped-out cover above.) From opening track “In the Flowers,” where dreamy swirls of guitar explode into an avalanche of battering-ram percussion, to closing cut “Brother Sport,” whose sunny vocals and gleeful synthesizers skitter across syncopated grooves before mutating into minimalist ambient-house, this is an album of endless sonic surprises. While tracks like the low-key “No More Runnin’ ” are more conventionally song-oriented, the focus here is on constantly shifting textures and moods, like the central riff of “Daily Routine,” which sounds like a bowling ball being thrown for a strike across the keys of an organ, or the moment on “Guys Eyes” that suggests nothing so much as a backwards loop of a piano being dropped from the roof of a monastery.

The sound of Random Movement is a bit difficult to describe. Samples stand out from a wide variety of old soul/funk/dub/jazz albums, and the overall style of production, writing and orchestration definitely reflects that. The music feels like a hot beach at sunset, like that small club you used to go to back in the day that has long since shut its doors, like the good memories of how things used to be. Deep rolling basslines, good swingin breaks, and 10 tons of soul--Definitely a source of that feel-good vibe. One word seems to get tossed around alot to describe the Random Movement drum and bass sound, and that word is ---DEEP---.

Being a huge fan of the Swayzak duo I was totally shocked when I heard this. Trashy synth-pop with very little innovation and awful lyrics. Quite far from the minimalism which Swayzak has been associated with or even quality synth-pop like Fischerspooner, Adult, Felix or DMX Krew. The change in orientation shouldn't have been a surprise - the Himawari release already pointed in this direction, altough it still retained a great deal of Swayzak trademark quality and style which went totally missing here. The only track worth mentioning is "I Dance Alone", but it is far too litle to justify purchasing this album. It would have been better if they had released this under another name and said: "This is our more commercial side. An experiment, really, just for fun". However, it looks as though I'm alone on this one.

Between Stations is the long anticipated debut EP from Recue (Riku Annala). Already known by some through his live performances with Bad Loop and here at One with his recent remix for If:Then:Goto, the interest in a solo release has been building up for awhile. We're the lucky ones who bring it to you.

Heavy and equal elements of ambient, dub, idm, and techno are present in Recue's sound. Rhythms trip around and over strong melodies that together carry a persistent groove along currents of bass and ragged arpeggios. Sublime and sombre introspective moments are here as well - such as the drowned bass of 'Silversands', the melodic ambience of 'Between Stations', and the enamoring guest-vocals of Jobie on the lush 'Come away with me'.

Modul is an electronic music project from Krasnodar, Russia. It consists of three persons: Evgeny Shchukin, Evgeny Fomin and Alexander Tochilkin. Since 2003 the collective is engaged in creation of electronic music in different directions: from "home electronics" to various dance compositions and also live shows. The symbiosis of tuneful idm, pieces of classical electronica and modern rhythms is a distinguishing feature of Modul. Creating productions the band uses both analog and digital equipment, as well as acoustic instruments and self-designed devices. The members consider, that contemporary musician must competently combine various facilities, use all available resources and not confine to a certain bound of one musical style. Modul is a delicate balance between complexed and coloured, simple and insipid, a compound construction of many original parts.

Overall this is a mixed bag and yet the highlights are so blindingly good that it is worth getting for these alone. Memory Jog is the kind of track that strikes me to the core of why electronic and dance music define my listening taste for the past decade. Sheer exuberance, delight, intensity and complexity. The drum and bass elements are subtle and intelligent enough to work for a diverse crowd. I felt let down by the stumbling bass and rap that opens this disc but overall this is a class act and I would snap up a new disc. Check the marcus intalex fabriclive 35 for further intelligent and life-affirming electronica.

More Than Alot does not simply contain a fistful of explosive D'n'B hits for you to bounce around to: it is far more adventurous in its scope and vision. The album includes intelligent, liquid forms of the genre, a smash hip-hop hit and even some well-seasoned dubstep treats. After the gentle introduction of 'Can’t Get Enough', the thrillingly satirical 'Music Club' judders out of the darkness at a sickening pace with horns blaring. It is incredible that this is followed by 'Against All Odds', and thankfully, it has nothing to do with Phil Collins, as C & S sample the Incredible Bongo Band’s 'Apache' break and recruit London’s emcee Kano into the mix; this, for me, means that C & S have created the UK hip-hop smash of the year.

The album continues the patterns of the previous albums, with brooding, ominous melodies building into crashing climaxes. It has generally received positive reviews from the public, with a rating of 85%--or Universal Acclaim--at Metacritic.
From an interview on "Slice of the shiny" Munaf said The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place was EITS's "attempt at love songs".
"Your Hand In Mine" was adapted for inclusion in the Friday Night Lights soundtrack, along with other original material written for the movie. The song was shortened from its album length of over eight minutes to just over four, and was embellished with string accompaniment.
"The Only Moment We Were Alone" was featured in commercials for the 2008 film Australia.

This is by far VS' greatest compositional accomplishment, bar "Rossz" (a completely different style altogether). Putting really great mixing and production (for it's time) behind odd time signatures, like 5/4s and 7/4s, and a truly crossover style blending ragga, jazz, "classic" (80's rock) drum n bass, and even things so far stylistically removed (though conceptually related) as ska-punk (see Track 01: Abomonation Street, for which he sampled X-Ray Spex' "Oh Bondage Up Yours!"). All of this is crammed into great dance record, which is party focussed without letting the technically minded down, and creating a great "best of both worlds" release for those who appreciate both glitch and breakcore.

Es incalculable la cantidad de artistas que empezaron a hacer música imitando a sus héroes, versionando sus canciones o retomando sus ideas. Podríamos preguntarle a Bob Dylan por Pete Seeger, a Robert Smith por Jimi Hendrix o a Teenage Fanclub por The Byrds y Big Star, por ejemplo. Pero es que ya lo ha dicho el gran Billy Childish en más de una ocasión, el único valor del arte es que inspire a otras personas. Mateo González Bufi ha encontrado las musas en el sonido retrofuturista del French Touch, la escena electrónica francesa que desde finales de los 90 se ha convertido en marca de calidad. No lo oculta, incluso lo muestra con orgullo, como evidencia la remézcla del “Rock 1” de Cassius que se puede escuchar (y descargar) en su MySpace. En “Homeless Hero EP” da nuevos bríos a ideas que ya hemos visto en discos de otros artistas, pero con gusto y golpes de personalidad. El mejor ejemplo es la canción que le da título, con ese bajo magnético y esos momentos de distensión con melodías dulces entrecortadas. Pero también tiene buen pulso para construir techno-pop más ortodoxo, como muestra “We Begin”.
